三里屯 SANLITUN – Beijing – Kengo Kuma Associate Architects

While Kuma San never really talk about his urban design projects, I find them fairly interesting. They are not the most innovative designs, but he is convincing. For some reason, he was able to create a mall that’s not indoors. And this is difficult because its fairly hot in the summer in Beijing, and many contemporary malls in China are indoors, and lacks any relationships with its site. Additionally, there’s enough program and circulation on the site such that it is very friendly to a street audience. Its relatively active all hours of the day, and in a way, I think its successful in a city that doesn’t have a lot of enjoyable public spaces.
